Mayor Foxx proclaims April 30, 2013 as “Jazz Appreciation Day”
Dear Board Members, Sponsors and Friends.
It is with great pleasure that I inform you today that the Mayor of the City of Charlotte proclaimed April 30, 2013 as “Jazz Appreciation Day”. I want to share with you that when our Foundation had its first “Jazz in the Village” event in 2005, Jazz had virtually disappeared from the scene in the city of Charlotte. It was our Foundation, who made efforts to revive Jazz music in the Charlotte region by being the first ones to publically play Jazz in front of crowds ranging from over 100 to up to 400 interested Jazz fans today. Since then Jazz has become more popular in the city of Charlotte and more venues are making Jazz available – most prominently the Bechtler Museum (on the first Friday of each month) and the Jazz Arts Initiative. In fact, the Bechtler Jazz series has become so popular that they are doubling their efforts by having one gig from 6 – 7:30 pm and a second one from 8:30 – 10 pm on those Fridays. If you haven’t been to the Bechtler Jazz events, it is worth going, but be aware that without early reservations you will not be able to get in. Tickets are sold out at least one week before the event. Also check out their website at www.bechtler.org
While it remains the task of the German Language & Culture Foundation to first and foremost promote the teaching of the German language at high schools, colleges and universities it is gratifying to see a Jazz revival in town, thanks in some measure to our “Jazz in the Village” event.
I hope to see many of you at the next Bechtler Jazz gigs and wish you a great weekend.
