German Language & Culture Foundation Awards Scholarships to Gaston County School Students
Dear Board Members, Sponsors and Friends.
April 12, 2013 was another great day for our Foundation as we were able to award $10,250 in scholarships to 10 deserving Gaston County School students enrolled in German language classes. These students will be travelling this summer to Gotha (Thüringen) – the sister city of Gastonia in Germany – were they will spend 10 days in a German classroom while being home hosted. The remaining 4 days they will be touring sites in the region and travel with a host’s parents to learn more about the immediate surroundings of Gotha in addition to travelling to Berlin. Students, Parents and the principals of Forestview High School and Ashbrook High School were present at the celebration. German programs not only exist but are growing at both high schools. In fact, you will be delighted to hear that the German program at Ashbrook HS was not doing well at all, but since they are part of our Foundation’s scholarship program enrollment has increased to over 100 students in the German program so that an additional teacher had to be hired. Most of that success can be attributed to Hannah Anderson, a very able and energetic young teacher who made it her personal goal to revive the German program. At Forestview HS we are lucky to have Sabine Schmid-Rankin responsible for the German program and Sabine has been very successful for many many years to keep a strong German language program at that school. Our thanks go to both – Sabine and Hannah – for what they do.
Please keep continuing your support of our Foundation so that we can continue the good work.
Thank you and warm regards.
